Rail Travel and Tourism: Poster Art in the 1920s

Our visual history class explored travel and tourism imagery this week, and my paper is about the Art Deco travel posters made by Maurice Logan for the Southern Pacific Railroad in the 1920s. In my paper I very briefly recap the Art Deco movement and then proceed to analyze two posters Maurice Logan created in 1923 to promote rail travel via Southern Pacific Railways. My analysis is framed by our readings this week which included portions of Jeffrey Meikle’s Postcard America and Susan Matt’s Keeping Up with the Jonses.
