It’s almost the time of year again for NaNoWriMo, where writers everywhere endeavor to write 50,000 words towards a novel or other writing project. As a four year veteran myself, I aim to finally “win” by reaching 50,000 words this year.
What is NaNoWriMo?
Short for National Novel Writing Month, the organization that hosts the event annually is a non-profit whose mission is to promote creative writing. The website for NaNoWriMo offers ways for you to track your progress, connect with an international community of writers, and even get help and support along the way. And, unless you choose to donate, NaNoWriMo is totally free for you to participate in, including the website.
Even if you don’t think you want to write a whole novel in 30 days, the process is a brilliant way to build momentum for whatever your writing project. And you can’t go wrong joining a community of writers who support your work. Many cities have local chapters that host write-ins either virtually or in person at a local library or cafe.
How to Prepare
Not sure where to start? Don’t even have a project in mind yet? Have no fear! Preptober is almost here! Every year, the organization hosts events and guidance to kick off your experience. Brainstorming begins in mid-September this year followed by weekly activities throughout the month of October. By the time November 1st arrives, you’ll be ready to begin.
